The effect of temperature gradients on the sharkskin surface instability in polymer extrusion through a slit die

چکیده
The sharkskin surface instability is commonly observed in the extrusion of polymer melts. We present a series of experiments in which a specifically designed rectangular slit die with insulated and independently heated sides and is used to induce precise temperature gradients across a flowing polyethylene melt. Our previous experiments demonstrated that the character of the surface distortions produced by the sharkskin instability was a function of the die wall temperature and therefore the extrudate had viscoelastic properties at the surface. In this paper, we explore the role of temperature and viscoelastic property gradients near the capillary wall. The amplitude of the sharkskin instability is quantified and plotted against apparent shear and extension rates. Analysis of the data demonstrates that the amplitude and frequency of the instability is independent of bulk temperature and temperature gradient and is dependent only on wall temperature. The data are normalized using a dimensionless Weissenberg number based on the extension rate to collapse the data collected over all temperatures and gradients onto a single master curve. We conclude with an example of a rectangular extrudate exhibiting varying surface roughness due to differential die heating and discuss the implications of our observations on the sharkskin surface instability mechanism and on commercial applications.

Control of the sharkskin instability in the extrusion of polymer melts using induced temperature gradients
Flow instabilities occur in a variety of commercial polymer processing operations including extrusion, film blowing, fiber spinning and coating. During the extrusion of molten polymer through capillary or slit die geometries, a transition from a smooth surface to a nearly periodic ridge-like surface distortion has been observed at a critical shear rate or wall shear stress (Petrie and Denn 1976...
متن کاملWall Slip and Boundary Effects in Polymer Shear Flows
Polymer – surface interactions strongly influence many important industrial and rheological flows. In particular, polymer melts and solutions slip against the surface; this has long been associated with sharkskin and spurt in extrusion, and recent experimental observations suggest that slip also plays a role in the formation of enhanced concentration fluctuations in entangled polymer solutions....
متن کاملReview of Existing Models for Boundary Conditions and Instability Mechanisms
In this report a concise review is given of the literature on slip phenomena at the wall of extrusion devices and the role of slip-laws in modeling of extrusion instabilities. In section 2 the main three instabilities are discussed: spurt, in which big pressure oscillations occur and the extrudate leaves the die in an oscillating way, sharkskin, which leads to more or less regular surface defec...
متن کاملEffect of Die Profile on Mechanical Properties of Product in Extrusion of Rods
In any metal forming process, both the strain rate and deformation rate depend on the die profile. The die profile also, is responsible for the non-uniformity of the deformation along the cross-section. These affect the quality and mechanical properties of the product. Therefore, if a die is designed, in which the affecting variables can be controlled spontaneously it is hoped to obtain a produ...
متن کاملA generalized upper bound solution for bimetallic rod extrusion through arbitrarily curved dies
In this paper, an upper bound approach is used to analyze the extrusion process of bimetallic rods through arbitrarily curved dies. Based on a spherical velocity field, internal, shearing and frictional power terms are calculated. The developed upper bound solution is used for calculating the extrusion force for two types of die shapes: a conical die as a linear die profile and a streamlined di...
